Breast Lift

A breast lift, or mastopexy, reshapes and supports a drooping breast by removing excess skin and repositioning the breast and nipple. It changes position and shape more than volume.

03Aesthetic breast surgery
  • Shape and nipple-position correction
  • Incision pattern selected for the degree of droop
  • Lift alone or combined with volume surgery

Suitability

What can a breast lift address?

A lift is considered when the skin envelope and nipple position—not simply breast size—are the main concern.

  • Breast drooping after pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss
  • A nipple sitting at or below the breast crease when unsupported
  • Stretched skin or enlarged areolae
  • Asymmetry in breast or nipple height
01

Lift, augmentation or reduction?

A lift removes skin and reshapes existing tissue; it does not create a large increase in breast volume. If upper fullness is a priority, an implant or fat transfer may be considered. If the breast is also heavy or too large, reduction may be combined with the lift.

02

Choosing the incision pattern

The pattern depends on breast size, skin quality, nipple position and the degree of drooping. It may be limited to the areola, extend vertically, or include the breast crease. The smallest scar is not always the safest or most effective pattern for the required reshaping.

  • Plan nipple and areola position
  • Balance shape, tension and scar length
  • Consider pregnancy and weight stability
03

Recovery and lasting change

A support bra, incision care and temporary activity limits protect healing tissues. Shape continues to settle as swelling improves. Scars are permanent but usually soften and fade. Ageing, gravity, pregnancy and weight change can alter the breast again over time.

04

Risks and limitations

The consultation should cover the expected scar pattern, breast-sensation changes and whether a second operation could be needed.

  • Bleeding, infection, fluid collection or delayed healing
  • Visible scars, asymmetry or contour irregularity
  • Temporary or permanent nipple or breast sensation change
  • Partial or complete nipple or skin loss is uncommon but possible
  • Recurrent drooping or need for revision

Frequently asked questions

Does a lift make breasts smaller?

It removes skin and reshapes the breast, so the bra fit may change slightly, but it is not designed for major volume reduction. Reduction is added when less volume is wanted.

Do I need an implant with a lift?

Not automatically. An implant is considered when more volume or upper fullness is wanted and tissue alone cannot provide it.

Will pregnancy affect the result?

It can. Pregnancy and weight change may stretch the tissues again, so timing should be discussed if pregnancy is planned soon.
