Pathology remains the foundation of breast cancer diagnosis, including tumour type, grade and hormone-receptor and HER2 status. In selected early-stage cancers, however, a validated genomic assay may add information about recurrence risk and the likely value of chemotherapy.
The decision is individual and should be made by the breast multidisciplinary team using the complete pathology report, stage, age, menopausal status and overall health. A genomic test does not replace pathology and is not required for every patient.
